Analysis of the play Twelfth Night by William Shakespeare

All the plays of Shakespeare are amazing. The play which I like most is “The Twelfth Night” or the alternative title is “What You Will”. It is a romantic comedy. I like the unique style of the play. Fusing the elements of structure, plot, humour, and pathos into a satisfactory creative comedy. Shakespeare employed the technique of double plot, and the use of music, poetry, and songs which makes it unique and interesting.  The songs have a significant role as they appeal to emotions. I still remember the song and my favorite line,” Journeys end in lovers meeting”. The level of comedy in Twelfth Night is praiseworthy. The comedy brings a smile to the face of readers and I can’t stop laughing. We can find the character of a clown in many Shakespearean plays. The Feste is the clown who is a funny character. Through his action and language, he makes others laugh. The art of characterization of Shakespeare is outstanding. The characters are very interesting and well suited for their role so it felt like they are real characters involved in a real-life situation. The creation of twin characters is very interesting. My favorite character is Viola, who disguises herself as a boy named Cesario. She is the protagonist of the play and has a vital role. The entire plot revolves around her. She possesses certain qualities such as she is clever and her decision to disguise herself helps her to survive. She is consistent in love and loyal in her duty.

The most interesting concept that I find in the play is the concept of the Love Triangle. The entire plot is connected to it. It is the love triangle that gives rise to comedy and makes this play very interesting and entertaining. There is a love triangle between Viola, Olivia, and Duke Orsino. Viola fell in love with Orsino, while Orsino fell in love with Olivia and Olivia fell in love with Cesario, who is Viola disguised herself as a boy. It creates confusion that led to comedy. Appearance versus reality is the main theme. The appearances are deceptive and we are not sure who is who. We found it in the subplot as well where Feste disguises himself as Sir Topas to make fool of Malvolio. The letter that Maria wrote to Malvolio on behalf of Olivia is also deceptive which takes Malvolio into an illusion. The play gets more interesting when her twin brother of Viola named Sebastian came on the scene. The people were unable to differentiate between Sebastian and Cesario. They misunderstood them so comic scenes are created and things get much more complex. Sebastian likes Olivia and is willing to marry her and got married. On the other day, Olivia finds it awkward to deny the marriage when she meets Cesario and mistakes him for Sebastian. This is for the First time at the end of the play that the twins are seen together on the stage at the same time and things get revealed and everyone was surprised. The twin brother and sister were very happy to see each other alive. Viola gets her love and is married to Orsino.  All the complexities and problems were solved. The challenges have been overcome. In the end, everyone seems happy. There is a happy ending.
